The Council is looking for topics for the three (canon) art and fic contests we are going to run in 2016 and we would love to hear your suggestions and ideas.

Which topic/theme would motivate you to participate in a contest next year? Or what would you like to see and read about in case you are not interested in participating but curious what your fellow members come up with?

It is even possible to re-run a former contest from previous years. Was there one you were particularly fond of?

Please put in your ideas below. This thread will be open until 1st of January. Afterwards we are going to have a poll to choose the three most popular topics.

BTW, here are two examples for possible themes (although very related to each other):

* Now & Then (chars at two contrasting stages in their life)
* The Evolution of a Character (show several stages of a char in one art piece/story)

Dressed to the Nines - get the elves gussied up in either fancy Wolfrider attire, or AU them into modern fashion

Now and Then - Tribe members as they are now meet their younger (possibly happier, angrier, or more immature) selves

Wolves and Riders - Kind of a silly one, but artists could draw current tribe members as wolves and one of their past or present wolf-friends as their bonded elf

If it happened in Rivertwine - Re-imagine a scene from another piece of fiction set in Rivertwine.

Examples - A drawing of an elf swinging away from a bear on a ledge similar to Han and Luke escaping the stormtroopers in the original Star Wars. A story of elves caught out in the snow and using a carcass for warmth similar to the Empire Strikes Back. (Yeah, Star Wars is on my mind for some reason. )

I just want folks to keep in mind -- what would make you want to produce something FOR a contest?

A really creative and challenging theme is a fun idea… but not if it winds up making people have a hard time coming up with an idea for it, or feeling like any idea that would fit the theme is really complicated and thus getting psyched out of doing something.

Complex themes are good for the Fic half of contests. Ideally, for the Art half, I think a theme has to be open to both simple interpretations, and also complex interpretations. So that people feel they can participate without having to do something that is on the level of a calendar page in complexity.

I really like some of the above suggestions, which are really pushing the boundaries of what we've done before! They make me have ideas already! :D

I confess I really like the idea of Nightstorm "if it happens in Rivertwine" ^^ that sounds so funny and it is a big range of possibilities.

Opposites is great, either, I think its a subject that can be used in any dimension and gives the people enough range for an idea they could realize.

What crosses my mind:

Combining Text/Lyric and drawing. Making a picture to some lines out of a poem or a song that fits to a character or a situation... or combining this as Teamwork, when some of the writers create such a text (small, perhaps not longer then 100 words or shorter... or some very focused lines) and somebody makes the piece of art for it .

Especially by using some lines out of a beloved song opens a lot of possibilities as well for complicated as for not complicated art. I have done it in the past with some friends as well with a simple portrait and some song-lines that characterize the character or with a complete scene... or something in between.

And the text can be included in the picture, but it doesn't have to and can be placed also als Subtitle... oder below the picture... however.

I also really like the suggestion about recreating famous scenes in an RTH context. :) I wonder if there would be a way to translate that into fiction, while still allowing the stories to be posted (since stories can't be AU)? Or if that would be an art-only challenge, as would the Song Lyrics idea?

It's okay to suggest a theme that is art-only or fic-only. We *usually* run contests where the theme is for both art and fic. But we don't have to -- we can run two different themes. (As we do when we run an AU art contest.)

I had an interesting idea..(?)

What if the artists did an illustration for an existing story and the writers did a short story of a piece of art? When folks signed up for the contest, the pieces selected by the council could feature stories and/or art of the signees. EX: If Peggy signed up then one her stories or art could be in the list. Of course, it might not work out evenly for the number of contestants, but that's where the council could make the choice of assignment. It'd be like drawing out of a hat.

Does that make sense? You've all probably done something like that. I just think it would compliment our current library and gallery...

Just a thought...
